March 2007 Is Anybody There? .
I think you will agree with me in saying that communication is a magnificent gift from God and essential for successful relationships. Communication is necessary in every relationship, whether it be between spouses, between parent and child, or you and your boss. When the lines of communication are open the relationship is strengthened, but when the lines are broken misunderstanding, confusion, and disaster result!

These same principles hold true with church ministry teams. Successful teams strive to find more and more effective means of communication between the staff, lay leaders and team members. In our small group ministry here at New Hope Church, communication between the community leaders and their small group leaders and hosts is recognized as vital. It’s the vehicle that provides our small group leaders and hosts with the direction and encouragement needed to build a successful ministry.

There are four key areas that good communication helps to build:

1. Prayer – The importance of a community leader’s prayers for his/her small group leaders cannot be over-emphasized. God’s Word tells us that the prayer of a righteous person is both powerful and effective as we pray for God’s help to encourage and build our small group leaders.

2. Encouragement – Every leader needs a person to encourage and walk along side of them to let them know they are not alone. Our community leaders are committed to providing words of support, especially when our small group leaders are faced with small group challenges.

3. Support – Once in a while our small group leaders need another person to help them work out a problem in their group. It may be advice they seek, or just a sound-board for their own ideas. Support may also come in the way of suggestions for a new small group study series, or a better understanding of a group dynamic situation.

4. Training – Even the most enthusiastic and devoted person will not become a good leader without training. We all need to hear and see what a good small group leader looks like. At New Hope Church we are committed to provide two yearly leadership training seminars, which will focus on the skills and characteristic of a good small group leader. We encourage you to take advantage of these semi- annual training seminars to sharpen your skills and be more effective in shepherding your group.

In an effort to strengthen our communication lines with our small group leaders and hosts, we will be calling you about an innovative communication approach which will center on peer group support. Our aim is to be more effective in supporting and building the skills of our small group leaders (you), to enable you to be more effective as you faithfully love and shepherd your own group members.
